Obama Calls For New Role For U.S. Troops
While campaigning in Iowa on Saturday, presidential candidate Barack Obama put forth the suggestion that U.S. troops in Iraq be sent to fight al Qaeda.
What he did not mean is the insurgents in Iraq that the Bush Administration calls al Qaeda. He means the al Qaeda that actually attacked us on September 11th and is holed-up along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border.
President George W Bush pulled troops away from that fight in 2003 to invade Iraq instead. It is a widely held belief that this move has destabilized the region and has made America less safe.
Obama, rather than calling to pull the troops home, is suggesting a redeployment back to the original, unfinished fight that September 11th got us into.
